The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has changed safety rules at the nation's airports following a near-collision between a plane and a helicopter on March 2. The change comes two months after a federal official warned of a serious risk of mid-air collisions at the Burbank Airport. The FAA is now requiring air traffic controllers to use radar in these situations and manage distances between aircraft. This change is part of a series of responses to a midair crash between an Army helicopter and an American Airlines plane that killed 67 people near Washington, D.C. The National Transportation Safety Board also expressed similar concerns about the mixing of commercial and helicopter traffic.
