The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has been monitoring the area around West Valley City after a concerned community member reported multiple people from the community being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The DHHS is currently monitoring data collected in the area to compare the area with other nearby counties. Sydney Christiansen, an epidemiologist for the Healthy Aging Program in the Department of Human Services, explained that every tip they receive is taken seriously. The disease, which affects approximately one million people in the United States and 10 million worldwide, does not have a cure. Utah currently holds the highest Parkinson's death rate in the nation. Age is seen as one of the main impacts of the disease, and it could be more prevalent among older neighborhoods due to the age factor.
