Russian tanker reaches Cuba amid critical energy shortage

A Russian-flagged tanker carrying 730,000 barrels of oil has arrived in Cuba, marking the first time in three months that an oil tanker has reached the island nation. The US government allowed the vessel to proceed despite a three-month US energy blockade. The arrival of the ship has exacerbated Cuba's severe energy crisis, which has led to endless blackouts and severe shortages of food and medicine. The cargo is carrying Russian Urals, a medium sour crude that is suitable for Cuba's ageing refineries. If delivered, the fuel would give Cuba's communist-run government more breathing room amid increasing pressure from the Trump administration.
