Last-Minute 'Shortcut' Left US Navy Fuel Ship Ran Aground

The USNS Big Horn (T-AO-198) was operating in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations off the coast of Oman when it ran aground due to lack of qualified oilers or mariners. The accident left internal support structures damaged and the hull breached. The captain and crew made "a series of poor decisions" and failed to follow procedure, according to a post-mortem. The cost of the repairs was estimated at $20 million. Both the captain and the navigator are still employed.
