French restaurant Taix, a renowned institution for 90 years, is set to close its doors on Sunset Boulevard on March 29. The sprawling Echo Park landmark could accommodate over 400 diners and was a popular venue for banquets, celebratory dinners and milestone parties. The restaurant was nominated as a Historic-Cultural Monument six years ago but was removed from protection by Councilmember Mitch O'Farrell, who stripped the designation down to some exterior signage and an interior wooden bar top. Taix plans to reopen a new restaurant with the same name on the bottom floor of a 166-unit cube that will include the landmarked plastic signage and salvaged bar.
