A bill that would limit the protections provided by the Endangered Species Act was pulled from the House floor on Earth Day, coincidentally being Earth Day. The bill's sponsor, Rep. Bruce Westerman, argued that the original law had failed to achieve its intended goals and morphed into a weapon instead of a tool. However, several Florida House members, including Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, had concerns about the potential impact of certain provisions such as the exemption off-shore drilling received from the Trump administration. Activists celebrated the bill's withdrawal as a sign that efforts to gut protections for endangered species are not moving forward. The legislation, which includes many provisions, aims to place timelines on recovery efforts and return species management back to the states where the animals live.
