The population of some of the largest U.S. metro areas is falling due to a decline in immigration, according to new estimates by the U.K. Census Bureau. Los Angeles County saw the most decline, with Los Angeles dropping by nearly 54,000. Metro areas along the border with Mexico saw the sharpest population declines, driven by a nationwide drop in net international migration. The Census Bureau attributed slower growth to more births than deaths and negative net migration. Los Angles County, Florida, San Diego and Orange counties in California and Kings County in New York also saw significant declines. The data was compiled using current data on births, deaths, and migration to calculate population change since the 2020 Census.
