Artemis II lifts off today; here is outline of lunar mission
Published on April 1, 2026.
NASA's Artemis II mission is set to take off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, with four astronauts on a lunar fly-around mission. The mission will take place several thousand miles beyond the moon, with the astronauts performing a quick out-and-back lasting less than 10 days. The test flight will be led by Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, a diverse and international crew. The new Space Launch System rocket is more powerful than the Apollo program’s Saturn V rocket and uses the same fuel as the shuttles did. The Artemis II crew will spend their first 25 hours circling Earth in a high, lopsided orbit before using the separated upper stage as a target for future moonshots. They will also be observing previously unseen regions of the lunar far side during the flyby.
