This Altered State of Consciousness Feels Like Peace—But It Can Have a Dark Side, Scientists Say

Meditation, a form of peace that can expose the repressed inner self, can trigger negative experiences in one in ten people, including anxiety and emotional sensitivity to reliving traumatic experiences. Researchers from the University of Wisconsin–Madison found that while meditation can bring peace, it can also cause a destabilizing feeling. These findings challenged the idea of meditation as universally benign. Simon B. Goldberg, an associate professor of counseling psychology and researcher, found that meditation can trigger more negative experiences far more often than we commonly assume. While these experiences may not be caused by meditation, they also reflect underlying conditions that would have surfaced anyway. Anoop Singh, MD, from Mindpath Health in California, said that meditation does not necessarily signal harm but can cause temporary restlessness, difficult emotions, or increased self-awareness.
