Viral videos aside, driverless cars make us safer

A recent viral TikTok video showed a self-driving Waymo making a left turn across multiple lanes of traffic while its passengers were screaming and cursing. The author argues that this is not the only criticism of the technology, but it provides context comparing driverless cars to human drivers. Despite these incidents, Waymo, the state’s leading driverless car company, has reported 92% fewer crashes with serious injury and 82% less crashes with any injury compared to human ones. Despite this, Stephen Richer, Josh Heywood, CEO of the Republic Affairs, argues that driverless vehicles are safer than human drivers and that they make us safer. He also notes that they also make the world more accessible for the visually impaired, elderly, and those under 16.
