The Russian government is targeting Telegram, its most popular messaging app, despite public opposition and fears of a crackdown on freedoms. The Kremlin is pushing users to its new "national" messenger MAX, which many fear could be used to surveil them. The move has been criticised by ordinary Russians and pro-Kremlin hawks, who believe it could backfire for Russia's military in Ukraine. The app is used by millions of Russians daily for private communication and crucial information, including Russian officials, Kremlin propagandists, war bloggers, businesses, and celebrities. However, authorities have increasingly portrayed Telegram as a breeding ground for terrorism and criminal activity. Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, is being investigated for terrorism activity. Despite this, Olga Krygina, an activist from St. Petersburg, expressed her support for using the new national messenger, anticipating a possible ban.
