The deadline for taxpayers to claim $1.2 billion in federal tax refunds for 2022 is April 15. The funds are estimated to belong to over 1.3 million people who did not file their federal income tax return in 2023. The estimated median refund is $686, meaning half the refunds are worth even more. California and Texas have the most individuals who have yet to file their 2022 taxes, totalling $124.7 million and $111.9 million in unclaimed refunds respectively. If left unclaimed, the funds go to the U.S. Treasury. The IRS recommends tracking down copies of documents necessary for claim, completing a Form 4506-T or submitting your tax return.
