'If he’s not safe, he can’t learn'; Mom secures GPS tracker for son with autism at school
Published on April 18, 2026.
Kristina Waldrop, mother of an 8-year-old son with autism, Ethan Cuevas, has been allowed to wear an AngelSense GPS tracking device in the Ysleta Independent School District (Ysleta ISD) to help keep her son safe at school. The district initially denied the request citing a Texas law, HB 1481, which restricts tracking devices that could potentially violate other students' privacy through recording. Waldrop had been pushing for this permission, but after a meeting with the district's Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee, she said the district still does not believe the device is necessary for her son's safety. The agreement allows the tracking device to be used during school hours except in emergencies, but Waldrop believes this is not being treated as a safety necessity. She plans to continue pushing for the tracker to be recognized as a necessary safety necessity in the IEP.
