Egypt's Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, has announced that all commercial establishments including malls, shops, and restaurants will close at 9:00 PM for one month to reduce energy costs. The move comes as energy costs rise and fuel imports become harder to secure. The change has led to increased urban consumer price inflation, which is already above 13%, well down from a peak of 38% in September 2023. Many companies are reducing working hours to save energy, and some businesses are seeing this as an advantage. The government's balancing act is particularly crucial given the importance of tourism, one of Egypt’s main foreign currency sources. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates that tourism revenues are projected to approach $29 billion by 2030/31.
