A man at the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, Joe Rooney, said during a celebration of women in public service that women should only focus on building families rather than leadership. The comments were made during a public comment section during a meeting in Norristown, during which the leader of Montgomery County's government, Jamila Winder, recognized each of the 33 women in leadership from around the county. However, Mayor Jeanne Sorg, who is also the mayor of Ambler, countered the comments by stating that women in service are not in it for fame but for their personal good. The incident led Sorg to create a "Celebrating Women in Public Office Day" to be held annually in Ambler on March 19.
