Trachoma, a disease of the eye caused by infection with the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, is a public health problem in 30 countries and is responsible for the blindness or visual impairment of about 1.9 million people. The disease is difficult to reverse and spreads through personal contact and contact with infected individuals. In 2025, 97 million people live in trachoma endemic areas and are at risk of blindness. In total, 87 349 people received surgical treatment for advanced stage of the disease, and 44.4 million people were treated with antibiotics. Trachoma is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide and causes about 1% of all blindness worldwide. The economic cost of trachomas is estimated at US$2.3 billion, with lost visual impairment estimated at $8 billion when included.
