Republican Judge David Engler is challenging the voter-approved reproductive rights amendment in the Ohio Supreme Court. He argues that it is being interpreted in a way that eliminates Ohio's parental consent and judicial bypass requirements for minors seeking abortions. Engler argues that the amendment infringes upon his jurisdiction as a juvenile court judge over judicial bypass petitions, a legal process of granting a minor the right to obtain an abortion without the state-mandated parental involvement. He accuses Secretary of State Frank LaRose, Attorney General Dave Yost and the Ohio Ballot Board of being defendants in the case. Critics argue that existing state law still requires parental consent or a judge's approval before a minor can get an abortion.
