The U.S. Department of Justice has proposed a settlement with Cleveland-Cliffs Steel Corp. over the cleanup of hazardous waste from its Middletown Works facility in southwest Ohio. The proposal would require the company to perform "long-term corrective measures" at the 2,600-acre integrated steel mill. The consent decree would first address two closed landfills that received industrial wastewater treatment sludges, steel production process sludgeges and slag. It is expected to cost $12 million to clean up these areas. The settlement would also close a civil lawsuit filed by Cleveland-cliffs’ predecessor, AK Steel Corp., which was joined by the state of Ohio and environmental groups.
