A new analysis by Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza has revealed that hundreds of children who are physically well enough to be discharged from the UK's National Health Service (NHS) remain in the hospital due to lack of resources at home. The report found that more than 260,000 children spent three or more weeks hospitalized, with 1,300 remaining for over a year. One hospital reported that as of June 2025, 5% of its pediatric patients were unable to go home. De Souza is calling for collaboration in order to address the issue, calling for a coordinated and compassionate system backed by funding.
