Russian city faces toxic aftermath of refinery attack
Published on April 30, 2026.
The Russian port city of Tuapse is dealing with the aftermath of a third Ukrainian drone strike on its oil refinery this month, which caused a fire that led to a state of emergency in the area. The attack sparked a massive fire at the facility, cutting off production and releasing slicks of oil into the waters off the Black Sea coast. Residents were ordered not to drink tap water and schools remained closed as a precautionary measure. The consumer safety watchdog Rospotrebnadzor advised residents to limit time outdoors and keep windows closed due to elevated benzene levels in the air. Emergency workers have cleared five newly discovered oil-hit parts of the coast and have collected 12,600 cubic metres of contaminated material in Tuapse. The incident has raised concerns among some residents online and prompted some to question assurances from authorities that the situation is in hand. The Ukrainian government claims Russian forces have been attacking Ukrainian energy sites for many months, causing casualties and disrupting power and heating for thousands of residents during winter months.
