Ford Racing's new Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 has broken the world's electric car record, running a 6.87-second quarter mile at 221 mph at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte. The car's previous record was set by the Cobra Jet 1800 in September 2024. The design of the car was simplified and significantly improved, with two custom-built electric motors and inverters exceeding 98% efficiency. The vehicle also uses a patented centrifugal clutch, which allows it to run in direct drive where efficiency is highest. The battery layout is configurable and the car charges within a 20-minute turnaround window between runs. Despite this, Ford's focus is on affordable models under $40,000.
