New York City Mayor Mamdani has hosted a public Q&A on Reddit following a study by the Pew Charitable Trusts which found that every city that grew its housing stock by 10 percent over six years saw a decrease in rents. The study suggests that for New York City, building about 400,000 units of housing would mean an average of 67,000 per year, more than double what the city is currently building. Mamdan responded by saying that the city needs to build much more housing to address the housing crisis. He also addressed concerns about the transition from the "Tax the Rich" assembly platform to citywide property tax policy, specifically targeting the wealthiest 1% of New Yorkers and the most profitable corporations. The Mayor's Office to Protect Tenants and Director of the Director of Tenants, Director Weaver, have both supported homeownership and rent stabilization measures.
