During the episode of Marshals, Kayce and his U.S. Marshal team were working to rescue Andrea (Ash Santos) from Randall Clegg (Michael Cudlitz), who was abducted by Clegg. Kayce felt the weight of his family's influence over Andrea's abduction was on his shoulders during the mission. The character's death initially appeared to be self-inflicted, but it was later revealed that Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) arranged a murder-for-hire scheme involving Jamie Dutton.
