Overseas Filipinos are being enlisted as frontline first responders in the global fight against human trafficking, moving beyond their traditional roles as economic providers to vital links in maritime and border security. The Philippine Embassy in Bangladesh hosted a webinar titled "Know Your Rights: Family Law, Divorce, and Child Custody for Filipinas in Cross-Border Marriages" aimed at the growing Filipino diaspora in the Indian subcontinent. Ivy Miravalles, chief of the Migrant Integration and Education Division at the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), emphasized the importance of arming overseas Filipinos with skills to recognize coercive control and online exploitation. This approach marks a significant strategic pivot for the CFO, moving towards deeper diasporporation engagement. The rise in cross-border marriages in the region has necessitated stronger legal protections to prevent domestic exploitation and child custody rights.
