Solar drone with jumbo jet wingspan broke a flight record—then it crashed

A solar-powered drone, Solar Impulse 2, has crashed after a record-breaking flight lasting eight days. The aircraft, which previously performed the world's first solar powered crossings of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, was being used as an uncrewed test platform for US military missions. The company Skydweller Aero purchased and modified the aircraft to become a permanent test platform. The drone was operating in such a capacity when it crashed on its final flight on April 26.
