Alaska's Governor, Mike Dunleavy, has vetoed a bill designed to overhaul Alaska elections, SB 64, citing legal issues and concerns about the effectiveness of the bill. The bill, which includes a new ballot tracking system, provided paid postage for all absentee mail-in ballots, and implemented provisions for faster election results. If signed into law, the bill would implement a new system that allows voters to follow their absentee ballots through the counting process and establish a cybersecurity program to detect a data breach involving election systems. Despite these issues, the majority of lawmakers supported the bill, with 23 House votes and 16 Senate votes. If lawmakers decide to make the bill a law, they must override the governor’s veto.
