EPA takes early step in methane rule rollback

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken an early step in what is expected to be a significant rollback of the methane rule from oil and gas production. The rule, which requires drillers to reduce emissions of planet-heating methane, was previously announced to be revisited by the EPA last year, arguing that it was "throttling the oil & gas industry". The changes will save the sector about $208 million annually, but the administration did not calculate the rule's climate impacts, though it warned that it could lead to increased emissions. The EPA is also developing a proposal to further amend the rule.
