The Monmouth County Sheriff's EMS/ambulance service, MedStar, will begin responding to all Long Branch 911 calls from May 1, replacing the city's First Aid Squad due to staffing shortages and rising insurance costs. The city's mayor, John Pallone, stated that MedStar will provide primary city-wide EMS to Long Branch and will continue to be supplemented by volunteer services from the Elberon First Aid squad and Jersey Shore Hatzalah EMS. The contract with the county Sheriff will not increase costs for Long Branch taxpayers. Patients treated and transported by MedStar units will not receive a bill for service, and no Long Branch resident with or no medical coverage will be responsible for any costs incurred.
