Marquis "Smiley" Falls was convicted on all counts in a case involving neglect at a Calumet Township trailer park in 2021. The police were searching for Orlando Burgos, a suspect in a brutal beating, when Falls emerged holding out his 10-month-old daughter. Prosecutors alleged that Falls used the child as a "human shield". His defense lawyer refuted these allegations, noting there was no bodycam footage of the incident. The child's mother, Harley Ferguson, was arrested outside the trailer after she was uncooperative with officers and signed a pre-trial diversion agreement. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 3.
