Ex-FirstEnergy executives want charges tossed after mistrial

Former CEO Chuck Jones and former top lobbyist Michael Dowling have asked a judge to dismiss charges against them for bribing a state regulator, Sam Randazzo, after a jury deadlocked in their nine-week trial. The motions were filed in court, arguing that the state had a fair opportunity to present sufficient evidence to convict Jones. In exchange, prosecutors allege that Jones helped develop House Bill 6, the bill that gave a FirstEnergy subsidiary a $1.3 billion ratepayer bailout of two nuclear plants and allowed the company to continue making inflated profits. Prosecutors have not yet responded to the request.
