Whales are booming in Salish Sea — but not endangered orcas

The Salish Sea experienced a surge in whale activity last year, but not the most at risk. A report by the Pacific Whale Watch Association indicates that 50,000 wildlife reports were logged across the region in 2025. Bigger than any other species were reported, with the endangered southern resident orca seen on 93 days compared to 111 days for northern residents. Despite this, whale watch crews intervened 1,429 times last year to protect whales.
