Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has introduced legislation to remove FDA approval for the use of Mifepristone to end pregnancies, a drug that can terminate pregnancies at up to 70 days of gestation. The bill has received support from major anti-abortion groups, including major pro-choice Republicans. An estimated 7.5 million women have used the drug to terminate pregnancies since its FDA approval in 2000, accounting for 63 percent of all abortions in the US in 2023. Hawley argues that the ability of doctors to prescribe the drug across state lines has led to rampant abuse and that adverse health effects are far more common than the drug’s maker, Danco Laboratories, has acknowledged. His bill would ban the sale of the drug for use in abortions but allow it to be prescribed to treat Cushing’S Syndrome.
