The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and Mayor Brandon Johnson have praised their agreement to resolve a dispute over making May 1 a school holiday to allow teachers and students to protest against perceived injustices. The only concession was to keep schools "open" on May 1, which is currently on the CPS calendar. The union also secured a day of observance for district-wide Civic engagement, and CPS agreed to transport students whose teachers chose to take them on field trips to the 1 p.m. May Day event. However, this arrangement furthers the political goals of the CTU, which aim to extract tax money from well-to-do individuals and corporations to sustain a bloated system for a larger student population.
