Idaho Legislature adjourns sine die, a session focused on an uncertain budget landscape
Published on April 3, 2026.
The Idaho Legislature has adjourned after an 81-day session focused on addressing an uncertain budget situation. The budget was heavily cut due to a projected deficit and significant cuts to state agencies, raising concerns about long-term structural damage to agencies and programs. The 2026 Budget Rescissions Act included a 4% blanket onetime cut to virtually all state agencies excluding K-12 public education, Idaho State Police, Idaho Department of Corrections and Medicaid for Fiscal Year 2027. The legislature deviated from Gov. Brad Little's recommendation of only conforming in the future, instead making it retroactive and including the current tax year. The governor's office and JFAC leadership appeared at odds during the session, with Democratic leadership calling the budget situation a series of "bad decision making" that resulted in a spending problem rather than a revenue problem.
