A bipartisan group of lawmakers has introduced a bill in the House of Representatives to limit the sale of advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China and other countries. The Multilateral Alignment of Technology Controls on Hardware (MATCH) Act, led by Rep. Michael Baumgartner, R-Wash., aims to tighten existing export controls for semiconduct manufacturing equipment, the specialized tools used to create AI chips. The act would expand the types of chipmaking machines banned from being sold to China, restrict sales of associated services and tools to China's most important chip companies, and engage key allies to implement similar restrictions. This move is part of a yearslong push to limit sales of semiconductor machines to China. China's imports of semiconducting machinery have surged in recent years, largely due to soaring demand for AI chips in China and globally.
