Travis Scott, other prominent rap artists, have petitioned the Supreme Court over the use of rap lyrics as evidence in a death penalty case involving James Garfield Broadnax, a Black man convicted of killing two men as a 19-year-old. Scott's legal brief argues that prosecutors' use of 40 pages of his handwritten rap lyrics during the sentencing phase constitutes a content-based penalty on rap music as a form of expression. Other artists, including Killer Mike, T.I., Fat Joe, and Young Thug, have also written amicus briefs seeking to stop the execution of Broadnx. His execution is scheduled for April 30 and his lawyers are asking the court to halt the execution.
