Popular spice shows promise as diabetes treatment — it’s probably already in your pantry

Researchers from the Florida Institute of Technology have identified a popular spice, turmeric, that could potentially prevent heart damage caused by diabetes. Curcumin, a spice already found in Indian and South Asian cuisine, has been found to significantly reduce blood sugar levels and restore cellular responses to Type 1 diabetes. The study also found that it reduced inflammation, balanced the flow of calcium ions in their blood vessels, and increased a protein significantly affected by diabetes by a month. However, the researchers noted that more studies are needed to determine the most effective curcumin dosage.
