A new trend of video content aimed at young children is becoming increasingly harmful to young children on YouTube, with up to 40% of videos recommended to them appearing to be AI-generated. These videos often feature garbled text, made-up words, disfigured people and animals, nonsensical songs, and sometimes scary imagery. The author argues that this is AI slop for kids, which may cause brain damage and potentially damage the brain. She argues that technology companies' proposed solution is not good enough. Despite a recent investigation uncovering several videos, YouTube has terminated six channels for violating its terms of service. Despite mixed evidence of parental controls, Suskind argues that they are not sufficient or effective means of keeping kids safe online. She suggests universal, platform-level solutions like mandatory removal from all AI content from YouTube and feeding recommendations to kids, and mandatory enforcement protocols for all AI generated content.
