Reopen the Indian Point power plant

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has visited the site of the former Indian Point nuclear power plant in Westchester County, Westchester, and has called for it to reopen. The move reflects a broader campaign against traditional energy sources, with New York City already banning gas stoves and furnaces and Albany moving to require zero-emission vehicles for future car, pickup, and SUV sales. Despite the high electricity demand, New York still required the same amount of power when the plant went offline in 2021, leading to increased electricity imports and greater reliance on wind and solar generation. Malliotakis, who represents Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn in Congress, argues that restoring the plant would not require new transmission infrastructure and would require revisiting a political decision that should never have been made in the first place.
