Letters call for CYFD overhaul, climate action and PNM rethink

A report by the New Mexico Department of Justice (NMDOJ) has been released by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez criticizes the New Mexican Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) for its negligent mishandling of child abuse and neglect children cases. The report highlighted graphic case studies of child neglect and abuse. The department and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham claimed progress despite the report's claims of progress, but these were offensive compared to the preventable mental and physical damage inflicted upon New Mexico's children over decades. The New Mexico Legislature should abolish the CYFD and create a new independent agency overseen by a governing board, much like what has been proposed by Speaker of the House Javier Martínez. The Trump administration and its Republican allies are doing everything to increase greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate global warming patterns. The author argues that human actions creating higher levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have caused the warmer weather and that we have the power to reduce greenhouse gases.
