Rhsylvania state lawmakers have proposed a bill to provide free school meals to all public school students, regardless of family income, to ensure they are fed and ready to learn. The bill would be implemented in three phases, starting in all public elementary schools in the 2027-2028 school year, middle schools the following year, and high schools the next year. The rising prices of housing, utilities, and food prices have led to some families unable to afford free meals due to high school tuition costs. If passed, Rhode Island will become the 10th state to permanently implement a free school meal program.
