In Lebanon, UN peacekeepers are caught in the firing line
Published on March 31, 2026.
Three UN peacekeepers, all from Indonesia, were killed in two separate incidents in Lebanon amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. Initial findings suggest that the deaths were caused by a roadside explosion. The third UNIFIL member was killed when a projectile hit a UNIFil base near Adchit al-Qusayr. The Israeli military has stated that it has not allowed peacekeepers to leave their positions during this period. UNIFIFIL was established in 1978 to counter Palestinian militants and later became hostile to Israel after its 1982 invasion of Lebanon. The mandate was expanded to include monitoring a ceasefire, supporting the Lebanese army in its deployment into the south, and enforcing a prohibition of illegal arms there.
