Harmful claims that getting sick with measles can provide better protection than vaccines are being spread online in Indonesia as the country battles outbreaks of the disease. While recovering from an infection and vaccination both offer immunity, experts warn that the former comes with serious risks including immune system damage and death. A Facebook post claiming that children who recover from measles produce natural antibodies five to 10 times better than any vaccine stated that measles can be treated without hospital treatment through nasal irrigation, gargling with salt water, and consuming fruits without hospital. The claim has been refuted by experts who argue that the measles vaccines are safe and effective, while being infected with the virus poses serious health risks. The Indonesian government is leading a measles vaccination campaign to combat outbreaks in 11 provinces.
