Faith Lutheran's Makenna Sherman, a junior at the University of Utah, has been hailed as a rising star in the swimming pool this season, holding Southern Nevada’s top times in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 free. She was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis as a toddler and doctors suggested that swimming could provide pain relief and possibly be therapeutic. Despite occasional flare-ups, Sherman has been off the meds and benefiting from years in the pool. Her performance in open water competitions has also contributed to her success. She has committed to the University Utah after high school, where she will attend after she graduates.
