‘We’ve come a very, very long way’: A lifetime dedicated to mental health improvement

Dallas Earnshaw, superintendent at the Utah State Hospital in Provo, has dedicated his life to mental health improvement since his grandfather's suicide by suicide in 1976. He began his career in the field of mental health after discovering the field in 1983. Earnshaw has seen transformational changes in the treatment and treatment of mental illnesses, including the increase in understanding and compassion for those diagnosed with mental illnesses. He credits advances in treatment, programming, and medications for the transformation of the treatment of patients. Despite still having a history of stigma attached to mental illness, Earnshaw believes it has significantly improved since the days before.
