The American Benefits Council has published a report titled Growth Uncontrolled, highlighting the abuses of the 340B Drug Pricing Program, a federal prescription drug discount program intended to support underserved patients. The report argues that the program has been used by large hospitals to drive up health care costs for employers and working families, while failing to assist the patients it was intended to help. The state Senate's one-house budget proposal includes a provision that would restrict the program's expansion. The council urges reporting measures to reveal how hospitals use their 340B revenues and how much they're taking in. The original intent of 340B was to help vulnerable and uninsured patients access lower cost medications, but has instead become a major profit center for large hospitals.
