Northeast Minnesota residents are divided over the decision to repeal a 20-year ban on mining near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a controversial copper-nickel mine proposed by Twin Metals Minnesota. Some residents see mining as a threat to the wilderness area, while others argue it vital for the livelihoods of locals who also treasure the outdoors. The U.S. Senate voted to repeal the 20 year ban, allowing the company to apply for federal mineral leases. The resolution is expected to be signed by President Donald Trump, ending a prohibition against mineral leasing on 225,000 acres of land in the Superior National Forest. Mining boosters argue that opening up copper and nickel mines near the area is essential for the future of the Arrowhead. However, critics argue that mining industry exploitation and toxic mining threatens human health and environmental protection.
