Vivian Fritz, a senior editorial director at Vox, has written a book about effective altruism (EA), which suggests that we should use rigorous evidence and cost-benefit analysis to achieve the most measurable positive impact of donating to charity. EA is built on the idea that a dollar to one organization might save a life, while a dollar donated to another could buy a commemorative tote bag. The author suggests that while traditional advice about doing good, the actual impact of the hire is often smaller than the actual hiring gap between the hiring and the hiring of someone equally competent. Instead of quitting your job, move countries, or learn a new skillset, write a check or transfer to an organization on a credible evaluator's list (GiveWell). The author also suggests that the low barrier to entry to EA is the one most influenced by the concept.
