The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is working to remove the name of federal landmarks and holidays bearing Cesar Chavez's name from federal buildings and holidays. The statement comes after the late labor-movement icon was accused of sexually abusing minors and women who were part of his activist movement. The caucus argues that a just society has a duty to hold abusers accountable without exception. Prior to his death in 1993, Chavez was a leading Latino civil rights activist and co-founded the United Farm Workers union. The union has acknowledged unspecified allegations against Chavez and will not participate in annual festivities to honor him. California lawmaker, Sen. Alex Padilla, supports the effort, but does not publicly endorse the renaming of landmarks or holidays.
