Relief over NM malpractice win, but doctors say more needed

The passage of medical malpractice reform in New Mexico has been hailed as the most significant public policy success in over a decade. The state's medical shortage may be over, but there are still significant challenges in attracting and retaining doctors. The Legislature also introduced a $10,000 tax credit for physicians and entered New Mexico into the national doctor compact. However, these efforts could be hampered by the high cost of the gross receipts tax and high income tax rate. New Mexicans need to focus on additional ways to make New Mexico more attractive for doctors. Key policy changes, such as reforming the Gross receipts tax, would also benefit all sectors of the economy, including the health care sector.
